Voting for Family First was probably a good idea morally, because Family First candidates usually don't like abortion.

It was also probably a good idea from the p...oint of view of helping working-class families, because Family First preferences went to the Liberal National Party.

The reason Family First gave its preferences to Tony Abbott's party is because Family First believes Tony Abbott's economic policies are better for families.

Better for families? Many seem to have the wrong impression that Labor does more for working-class families, and that big companies are somehow bad. The opposite is actually true.

As far as I can remember, taxes, interest-rates, inflation and electricity bills have always been lower during Liberal governments.

And big companies aren't evil entities who should pay more than their fair share of taxes - big companies are actually made-up of individuals and families just like yours and mine. In fact, you could go out tomorrow and become a shareholder in any of those big companies if you want to. So if a government hurts big companies, they're actually hurting families and individuals just like you and me.

And seeing big companies employ lots of people - if they hurt the shareholders of those companies, they are really hurting everyone else who is employed by those companies too.

It's like the old sayings, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" and "Don't kill the milk cow" - or else you'll have nothing tomorrow!

Christ encourages us to voluntarily help the poor using our own resources. But the Bible doesn't teach that it's our right to expect to receive an income from other people's earnings and taxes (nor from their companies'). The Bible teaches self-responsibility, and promises prosperity to those who are productive so that we may have enough to give.

It's like the saying, "Give a man a fish, and you can only feed him for one day; but teach him to fish, and you can feed him for life".

So that's probably why, not only Family First but also many Christian individuals and families felt that Tony Abbott might do more for families. The Liberal National Party has a policy of treating everyone - including individuals like you and me and mums and dads who own companies - more fairly, giving everyone the chance to become peaceful, productive & prosperous members of society.

It was an important question. Bless you.
